About This Plant
Cryptomeria nana globosa (Dwarf Japanese Cedar), 'Dwarf Japanese Cedar', is valued for its garden character and seasonal interest in PNW landscapes.
Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) , evergreen conifer with awl-shaped leaves and a pyramidal form. Compact dwarf cultivars (Globosa Nana, Black Dragon) are popular as garden shrubs.
Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 5 to 9. Generally trouble-free. Foliage may bronze in winter (a feature, not a fault).
For a Pacific Northwest native shrub of similar character, consider Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon Grape, Oregon state flower), Philadelphus lewisii (Mock Orange), or Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray) , all support native pollinators and birds.
