About This Plant
Cryptomeria japonica 'Black Dragon' (Japanese Cedar) is a Japanese Cedar, a Japan (national tree of Japan) ornamental cultivar 'Black Dragon'.
Large evergreen conifer with feathery awl-shaped foliage that bronzes in winter cold (especially 'Yoshino', 'Sekkan-sugi'). Many sizes from dwarf 'Globosa Nana' to 60+ ft species form. PNW well-suited.
Plant in full sun to part shade, in humus-rich, moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 5 to 9. Long-lived. Generally deer-resistant once established.
If you'd like a Pacific Northwest native tree with similar grace, consider Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood), Acer circinatum (Vine Maple), Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone), or Amelanchier alnifolia (Saskatoon). These provide bird food, pollinator support, and Indigenous food heritage in your landscape.
