Smoke Tree (Cotinus) , large shrub or small tree grown for plumes of pinkish smoke-like seed structures and superb purple, gold, or red foliage cultivars.

Full sun suits this species. Plant in well-drained; tolerates lean rocky soils soil. Hardy USDA Zone 5 to 8. Drought-tolerant once established. Watch for verticillium wilt; otherwise generally trouble-free.

For a Pacific Northwest native counterpart in scale and bloom, consider Amelanchier alnifolia (Saskatoon / Western Serviceberry) for white spring flowers and edible blue berries, or Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for show-stopping spring bracts in light shade.
