About This Plant
Coleonema pulchrum compacta (Breath of Heaven), 'Breath of Heaven', is valued for its garden character and seasonal interest in PNW landscapes.
Breath of Heaven (Coleonema) , South African evergreen with fine needle-like aromatic foliage and clouds of tiny pink or white flowers from winter through spring. 'Sunset Gold' has chartreuse foliage.
Full sun to part sun suits this species. Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 8 to 11. Marginally hardy in zone 8 PNW; site in warmest exposure. Drought-tolerant once established.
For a Pacific Northwest native shrub of similar character, consider Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon Grape, Oregon state flower), Philadelphus lewisii (Mock Orange), or Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray) , all support native pollinators and birds.
