About This Plant

Clematis 'Elsa Spath' is a classic large-flowered clematis that has earned a devoted following for its ease of culture and its generous, 6-8 inch lavender-blue blooms accented by striking red anthers. An RHS Award of Garden Merit recipient, Elsa Spath is notably tolerant of shade compared to many clematis. It climbs vigorously to 6-10 feet, making it a good choice for a fence, pergola, or trellis.

Reliably hardy in USDA zones 4-9. Early blooms in late May or June can be large and occasionally semi-double. The later flush in early autumn produces single flowers. Keep the root zone cool and shaded with mulch or a groundcover.

Elsa Spath is a Pruning Group 2 clematis. Remove dead or weak stems in late winter, then prune the remaining growth back by about half. Like all clematis, the plant is mildly toxic if ingested and the sap can irritate skin.
