About This Plant

Chamaerops humilis (Mediterranean Palm), 'Mediterranean Palm' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.

Mediterranean Fan Palm , clumping cold-hardy fan palm, the only palm native to continental Europe. Slow-growing; tough specimen for sheltered sunny southern Oregon coast sites.

Full sun suits this species. Plant in well-drained; tolerates lean conditions soil. Hardy USDA Zone 8 to 11. Marginally hardy in zone 8 PNW; site in the warmest, most sheltered exposure. Drought-tolerant once established.

True palms are not native to the PNW; for a similarly bold evergreen specimen, consider Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) , sculptural reddish bark, glossy evergreen leaves, and a place of pride in southern Oregon's native flora.
