About This Plant
Chaenomeles speciosa 'Scarlet Storm' Double Take (Flowering Quince), 'Scarlet Storm', is valued for its garden character and seasonal interest in PNW landscapes.
Flowering Quinces (Chaenomeles) bear showy pink, red, white, or orange flowers on bare branches in late winter or very early spring, followed by edible (when cooked) yellow quinces. Tough and adaptable.
Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 5 to 9. Watch for leaf spot in humid conditions and fireblight in some regions. Prune just after flowering.
For a Pacific Northwest native shrub of similar character, consider Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon Grape, Oregon state flower), Philadelphus lewisii (Mock Orange), or Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray) , all support native pollinators and birds.
