About This Plant

Cercis canadensis 'Ruby Falls' (Weeping Redbud), 'Ruby Falls' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.

Eastern Redbud , beloved small flowering tree native to eastern N America; magenta-pink pea flowers along bare branches in early spring before leaves emerge. Many cultivars in white, deeper purple, and purple-foliage forms.

Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 4 to 9. Watch for verticillium wilt and canker on stressed trees. Avoid wet feet. Short-lived (20 to 30 yr in cultivation).

For a Pacific Northwest native counterpart in scale and bloom, consider Amelanchier alnifolia (Saskatoon / Western Serviceberry) for white spring flowers and edible blue berries, or Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for show-stopping spring bracts in light shade.
