About This Plant
Cercidiphyllum japonicum (Kats), 'Kats' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.
Katsura Tree , graceful Asian shade tree with heart-shaped leaves that emerge bronze, mature blue-green, and turn apricot to gold in fall with a distinctive cotton-candy or burnt-sugar scent.
Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 4 to 8. Provide consistent moisture; sensitive to drought stress. Generally trouble-free.
For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
