About This Plant
Cephalotaxus harringtonia 'Fastigiata' (Japanese Plum Yew), 'Fastigiata' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.
Japanese Plum Yew , refined evergreen shrub or small tree, often described as a yew that tolerates more sun and less ideal soil. 'Fastigiata' is the popular upright form.
Part shade to full shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 6 to 9. DEER-RESISTANT (one of the few yew-like evergreens that deer largely avoid, a major selling point). Generally trouble-free.
For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
