About This Plant
Blue Atlas Cedar is one of the most architecturally dramatic conifers available to Pacific Northwest gardeners. The short needles are clustered in dense whorls along the branches and carry a waxy coating that gives them their signature steely silver-blue color, a tone that intensifies in bright sun and creates extraordinary contrast in the landscape. The form evolves with age: young trees are narrowly pyramidal with a strong upright leader, while mature specimens develop a broader, more majestic profile with layered horizontal branching that creates sweeping planes of blue-silver foliage.
This is not a small garden tree. Blue Atlas Cedar typically reaches 40 to 60 feet at maturity, sometimes more, and needs space proportional to that eventual size. A minimum 20-foot clearance from buildings and other large trees gives it room to develop without being crowded. Plant it where it can grow into its natural form without heavy pruning, which compromises both the structure and the appearance. Given that space, it develops into a landmark specimen that anchors a large property and improves with every decade.
It grows best in full sun with well-drained soil and shows excellent drought tolerance once established. It adapts to a range of soil types including clay and alkaline conditions, which gives it more flexibility than many ornamental conifers. The striking blue coloration makes it a natural focal point for large landscape compositions.
