About This Plant

'Victoria' is a hardier California Lilac selection with deep cobalt-blue flower panicles and glossy dark evergreen leaves. One of the most cold-tolerant Ceanothus selections, reliable through USDA Zone 7. 6 to 10 feet tall and wide.

Blue Blossom (Ceanothus thyrsiflorus) is the iconic coastal California Lilac, a West Coast native evergreen shrub native to coastal Oregon south through California. Clouds of fragrant small blue-to-white flower panicles pack every branch tip in late spring, drawing one of the richest pollinator events of the coastal spring. Honey bees, bumblebees, native bees, small butterflies, and hoverflies work it heavily.

Ceanothus is a documented larval host for California tortoiseshell, pale swallowtail, Hedgerow hairstreak, brown elfin, and spring azure butterflies, and the dense spiny evergreen form gives songbirds year-round cover.

Pomo and Kashaya peoples used Ceanothus flowers for a mild soap. The saponin-rich blossoms lather in water.

Coastal-friendly. Native along the Oregon and California coast, tolerates salt spray and sandy soil.

Note on deer: Ceanothus is browsed by black-tailed deer, particularly new growth. Protect young plants until established.

Perfect on a sunny dry slope with Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Eriophyllum lanatum, Oregon grape, and coastal strawberry for a low-water pollinator bank.

Sharp drainage is essential; sandy, gravelly, or rocky lean soil is ideal. Do not summer-water established plants; excess summer moisture is a primary cause of decline. Light tip-prune after flowering to maintain shape; avoid hard cuts into old wood, which does not regenerate well.
