About This Plant
Carpinus betulus 'Fastigiata' (European Hornbeam 5#), 'Fastigiata' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.
European Hornbeam , refined dense shade tree with smooth gray bark, ribbed leaves, and yellow fall color. 'Fastigiata' is the popular columnar cultivar widely used in formal gardens and allées.
Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 4 to 8. Generally trouble-free; tolerates pruning well, often used for hedges and pleached forms.
For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
