About This Plant
Carex 'Evergold' is one of the most reliable and visually satisfying ornamental grasses for shade and part-shade gardens. Its narrow, arching leaves are striped down their length in a vivid combination of creamy gold at the center and deep green at the margins, creating a brightness that genuinely illuminates darker garden corners. The variegation stays clean and consistent through the entire year, since this is an evergreen sedge, giving the garden color and texture even in the depths of a Pacific Northwest winter when most herbaceous perennials have gone dormant.
It grows in a graceful, cascading mound to about 10 to 16 inches tall, with individual leaves reaching up to 15 inches long before arching toward the ground. This flowing habit makes it particularly effective spilling over the edge of a container, softening the front of a shaded border, or providing a year-round ground layer beneath deciduous shrubs and trees. It won the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in 1998 and has remained a go-to plant for good reason.
Plant in light to partial shade with rich, moderately moist soil. It tolerates more sun on the coast than it would in hotter inland climates, as long as moisture is consistent. Very little care is required: simply comb out any winter-tired foliage in early spring to refresh the plant. Deer resistant and easy to divide.
