About This Plant

Crimson Bottlebrush (Callistemon citrinus) is the classic Crimson Bottlebrush with bright scarlet flower spikes and narrow green leaves that smell of lemon when crushed; the most widely grown Callistemon. 8 to 15 ft tall. Zone 8 to 11, full sun, low to moderate water. Classic cylindrical bottlebrush-shaped flowers draw hummingbirds, honeybees, and native bees for weeks. Evergreen with narrow aromatic foliage. Drought-tolerant, salt-tolerant Australian native.

Care Notes

Plant in well-drained soil; tolerates lean, sandy soils and salt spray. Drought tolerant once established. Plant against a warm, sheltered south or west wall in zone 9; mulch the root zone and expect possible dieback in hard winters. Prune lightly after the first flush of bloom to shape; avoid cutting into old wood.
