About This Plant

Caladiums are among the most theatrical foliage plants available, and Caladium x hortulanum is the species behind nearly every spectacular variety on the market. The large, heart-shaped leaves are painted in combinations of white, pink, rose, red, and green, with prominent contrasting midribs, veined patterns, and mottled margins that vary dramatically by cultivar. Some varieties are bold and opaque; others are translucent and delicate, glowing when backlit.

Caladiums are grown from tubers and are prized for bringing vivid color to shaded spots where flowering plants struggle to perform. They are outstanding in containers on covered porches or patios, in woodland garden beds, and as houseplants in bright indirect light indoors. Foliage holds its color through the warm season.

Caladiums are tender perennials that go dormant in the fall. In mild climates or indoors, tubers can be stored through winter and regrown each year, often producing larger and more spectacular plants with each passing season.
