About This Plant

Buddleia 'Flutterby Blue Heaven' (Butterfly Bush), 'Flutterby Blue Heaven', is valued for its garden character and seasonal interest in PNW landscapes.

Butterfly Bush (Buddleia / Buddleja) is famous for fragrant lilac-shaped panicles that attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees in summer. Fast-growing, easy, and reliable.

Full sun suits this species. Plant in well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 5 to 9. INVASIVE: B. davidii is regulated as a noxious weed in Oregon , sterile cultivars (Lo & Behold series, 'Asian Moon', etc.) are recommended for sale and planting. Cut back hard in late winter for vigorous flowering on new wood.

For a Pacific Northwest native shrub of similar character, consider Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon Grape, Oregon state flower), Philadelphus lewisii (Mock Orange), or Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray) , all support native pollinators and birds.

Care Notes

Plant in well-drained, lean to average soil; avoid rich or consistently moist conditions. Cut back hard to 6-12 inches in late winter or early spring, as new wood produces all the season's growth. Deadhead spent spikes regularly to encourage reblooming through fall. Only sterile cultivars like Lo and Behold are legal in Oregon; confirm sterility before planting near natural areas. Watch for spider mite in dry summers; rinse foliage with water or treat with insecticidal soap at first sign.
