About This Plant
Brussels Sprouts 'Long Island Improved' is a reliable heirloom variety that has been feeding Pacific Northwest gardens for generations. The compact plants produce heavy yields of firm, 1-inch sprouts on stalks that reach 24 to 30 inches tall. This variety is especially well-suited to fall and early winter harvest, and the flavor actually improves after a frost or two, making Langlois's mild coastal winters a real advantage. About 90 to 100 days from transplant to harvest.
Plant in full sun in rich, consistently moist, well-drained soil. Brussels sprouts are heavy feeders and respond well to compost-amended beds and supplemental nitrogen early in the season. Space plants 24 inches apart. Use row cover after transplanting to exclude imported cabbage worm. Harvest sprouts from the bottom of the stalk upward as they firm up.
Brussels sprouts are not deer-resistant. A low fence or row cover provides reliable protection in deer-heavy areas. Plants are cold-hardy to about 10 degrees Fahrenheit, so they can stand in the garden well into winter.
