Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Hardy USDA Zone 9 to 11. ALL PARTS HIGHLY TOXIC, site with care. Frost-tender; overwinter indoors or treat as summer-only.
For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
