About This Plant

Black Gold Seedling Mix is a highly refined, OMRI Listed organic mix from Sun Gro Horticulture, formulated specifically for germinating seeds and rooting cuttings. It starts with fine, screened Canadian sphagnum peat moss combined with perlite, vermiculite, and an organic wetting agent. The result is a low-salt, fine-textured medium that is porous enough to drain well while holding just enough moisture to support delicate emerging roots.

Use it straight from the bag to fill seed trays, plug flats, and small propagation cells. The fine particle size lets tiny seeds make good contact with the medium, and the perlite and vermiculite keep air moving around roots as they develop. It also works well for rooting stem cuttings in pots or trays. Because it contains no meaningful fertilizer, plan to start feeding seedlings with a dilute liquid fertilizer once the first true leaves appear.

We stock this one because it is one of the better seed-starting mixes available in the Pacific Northwest, made by Sun Gro, a company that sources its peat from certified sustainable Canadian bogs. The OMRI certification means it is cleared for certified organic production as well as home gardens.
