About This Plant

Black Gold Peat Moss Plus is 100% Canadian sphagnum peat moss with an added organic wetting agent to help the medium re-wet evenly after it dries out. It is OMRI Listed for use in certified organic production. Sphagnum peat moss is harvested from northern Canadian bogs where it accumulates slowly over thousands of years. It has an acidic pH, high water-holding capacity, and a fibrous texture that opens up heavy soils and improves moisture retention in sandy ones.

Use it as a soil conditioner worked into garden beds, as a component in container potting mixes, or as a top amendment for acid-loving plants like blueberries, rhododendrons, azaleas, and camellias. Mix it thoroughly into the existing soil rather than layering it, since dry peat can be hydrophobic if left on its own. The organic wetting agent in the Plus formula makes it easier to rewet if the peat has dried in the bag or in a container. Work in lime if you are applying it to a bed where you want to keep the pH closer to neutral.

We carry peat because it remains the most reliable way to lower soil pH and improve moisture retention in one step, and some plants genuinely need it. That said, peat bogs regenerate very slowly. If your application does not specifically call for acidity, our Black Gold Just Coir is a more sustainable alternative, and both are on the shelf.
