About This Plant

Black Gold Orchid Mix is a bark-based, fast-draining potting medium from Sun Gro Horticulture, formulated specifically for epiphytic and semi-terrestrial orchids. It is built around processed fir or pine bark with added perlite and a pH-adjusting lime, and in the Western US may also contain pumice or cinders for extra drainage and aeration. The mix is OMRI Listed for use in certified organic production and carries the Black Gold Natural and Organic designation.

Use it for phalaenopsis, cymbidiums, cattleyas, dendrobiums, and other orchid types that need their roots to dry slightly between waterings. Fill the container about one-third full, position the plant so the base sits just below the rim, then pack mix loosely around the roots. Water thoroughly and allow to drain completely. Plan to repot every one to two years when the bark begins to break down, roots are circling, or the plant outgrows its container. Always choose a pot with drainage holes.

We carry this mix because it gives orchid growers a reliable, well-tested option that is widely used by hobbyists and serious collectors alike. The coarse bark structure mimics the naturally attached growing conditions of epiphytic orchids and supports strong root development without the waterlogging that kills most orchids.
