About This Plant

Black Gold Just Coir is 100% coconut coir from Sun Gro Horticulture, OMRI Listed for organic use. Coir is the fibrous material between a coconut's outer husk and the shell, a byproduct of coconut processing that was once discarded. Sun Gro sources its coir from inland coconut farms with rigorous salt-washing at the source, then washes and tests it again on arrival to ensure consistently low salt content. The result is a clean, uniform fiber with high water-holding capacity and a slightly acidic to neutral pH.

Use it as a direct substitute for peat moss in most applications: work it into garden beds to improve moisture retention and soil structure, blend it into container mixes alongside perlite or pumice for better drainage, or use it on its own as a growing medium for transplants and cuttings. It holds moisture well without becoming waterlogged, bounces back after drying better than peat does, and breaks down slowly so its benefits last through the season. Unlike peat, it does not strongly acidify the soil, making it a good fit for a broader range of plants.

We are glad to carry coir alongside peat because it gives customers a genuinely more sustainable choice. Peat bogs take centuries to form. Coconut coir is a renewable byproduct of a global food crop. For most uses, coir performs comparably to peat. If your plants specifically need acidic conditions, peat is still the better pick, and both are on the shelf.
