About This Plant
Black Gold Cactus Mix is a gritty, fast-draining potting medium designed for cacti, succulents, and bromeliads. Sun Gro formulates it with a high proportion of horticultural perlite, pumice, or cinders for drainage and root aeration, alongside processed bark, Canadian sphagnum peat moss, compost, and earthworm castings for a modest amount of organic matter. It also includes RESiLIENCE, a silica-based amendment that helps roots manage stress. The mix is OMRI Listed for organic use.
Use it straight from the bag for repotting cacti, succulents, aloes, and agaves into containers with drainage holes. Never let cactus sit in standing water. Because these plants are highly prone to root rot, the coarse texture of this mix is non-negotiable. Water thoroughly, let the pot drain completely, then wait until the soil is dry several inches deep before watering again. For in-ground planting in heavier native soil, blend this mix in at a ratio of at least 50 percent to improve drainage around the planting zone.
The Pacific Northwest coast is not natural cactus country, but many people grow these plants successfully in containers and covered outdoor spaces. A proper draining mix makes the difference between a plant that sulks and one that thrives. We carry Black Gold Cactus Mix because it is a proven formulation from a Pacific Northwest-based company that understands Western soils and growing conditions.
