About This Plant
Betula papyrifera (Paper Birch), 'Paper Birch' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.
Paper Birch / Canoe Birch , northern N American native; brilliant white peeling bark, golden fall color, fast-growing pioneer species.
Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 2 to 7. More borer-resistant than B. pendula but still vulnerable in hot dry sites. Provide consistent moisture.
For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
