About This Plant

Betula alba (White Birch), 'White Birch' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.

European Silver Birch , graceful classic white-bark birch with diamond-shaped leaves and golden fall color.

Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 3 to 7. PNW WATCHPOINT: heavily attacked by bronze birch borer in stressed trees. Keep evenly moist; avoid hot dry sites.

For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
