About This Plant
Painted-leaf begonias are among the most visually dramatic foliage plants available for indoor growing. Begonia rex-cultorum cultivars produce large, spiraling leaves in combinations of silver, deep burgundy, forest green, lavender, and bronze, with intricate banding and metallic shimmer that looks almost impossible in nature. Because assorted mixes include a range of cultivars, no two plants are exactly alike.
Place painted-leaf begonias in bright, indirect light, such as near an east-facing window. They thrive with consistent moisture but are prone to root rot if kept soggy. Allow the top inch of potting mix to dry before watering again. High humidity, above 50 percent, is essential. A pebble tray or naturally humid room helps maintain the right conditions.
Use a light, well-draining mix of peat, perlite, and vermiculite, and avoid fertilizing heavily during winter when growth slows. All parts contain calcium oxalate and are toxic to cats and dogs.
