About This Plant

Begonia odorata 'Red Glory' brings richly scented, deep red blooms to shade gardens and container plantings from early summer through fall. The fully double flowers feature velvety, ruffled petals and carry a sweet fragrance, a trait that sets the odorata begonias apart from most other tuberous types. Bright-green, serrated foliage provides a clean backdrop that lets the saturated color stand forward.

Grow 'Red Glory' in partial to full shade in rich, consistently moist, well-draining soil. The cool, foggy summers along the southern Oregon coast are well-suited to this begonia. It appreciates humidity and dislikes scorching afternoon sun. Plant tubers after the last frost, water at the base to limit mildew, and fertilize every three to four weeks for best performance.

After the first frost, dig tubers, allow them to dry for about a week, and store in dry peat or vermiculite at 35 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit until spring. All parts of Begonia odorata are toxic to cats and dogs, so situate containers accordingly.
