About This Plant

Begonia 'Green Leaf Scarlet' is one of the most reliable summer annuals available for Oregon coast gardens. This compact wax begonia produces a continuous flush of bright scarlet-red single flowers over glossy, waxy green foliage from late spring right through the first fall frost. Unlike many annuals that require constant deadheading, wax begonias are self-cleaning, shedding spent blooms on their own to keep the plant looking tidy with zero fuss. The combination of red blooms against bright green leaves creates a clean, bold color statement in beds, borders, containers, and window boxes.

One of the most versatile bedding plants available, 'Green Leaf Scarlet' performs in full sun to full shade, making it an outstanding solution for difficult spots that other annuals cannot handle. It tolerates the cool, overcast conditions common to the Oregon coast and will bloom steadily even through fog and mild summer temperatures. Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist but well drained. Deer and rabbits tend to avoid wax begonias, and the flowers attract bees and butterflies through the season.

Plant after all frost has passed and night temperatures remain above 50 degrees F. Space plants 8 to 10 inches apart to allow good air circulation and reduce fungal disease pressure. Wax begonias are low-maintenance, heat-tolerant, and exceptionally long-blooming, making 'Green Leaf Scarlet' one of the most rewarding plants per dollar in the summer garden. All parts of begonia are toxic to pets.
