About This Plant

Begonia fimbriata 'Red' is a tuberous begonia with a dramatic flair: the fully double flowers feature deeply fringed, carnation-like petal edges in rich cardinal red, reaching up to 6 inches across at their peak. Few summer annuals match this plant's sheer flower presence. Plants form bushy, upright mounds and bloom prolifically from midsummer through frost, producing dozens of ruffled blooms per plant over the season. The fringed petal edges catch light and move gently in any breeze, giving the flowers an almost theatrical quality that makes them standout specimens in containers, window boxes, and shaded garden beds.

Grow Red Fringed Begonia in partial shade with morning sun for the best bloom production and color saturation. Avoid harsh afternoon sun, which bleaches the flowers and stresses the foliage. Oregon coast summers with their characteristic overcast mornings and mild temperatures are close to ideal for this plant. Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Excellent drainage is essential since the tubers are vulnerable to rot in soggy conditions.

Plant after all frost danger has passed and nights stay above 50 degrees F. Tubers can be dug before the first frost and stored in a cool, dry location for replanting the following spring. Keep away from pets.
