About This Plant
Azara microphylla (Boxleaf Aza), 'Boxleaf Aza' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.
Boxleaf Azara is a refined Chilean evergreen with tiny boxwood-like leaves and chocolate-vanilla scented late-winter flowers. Loose graceful form, often trained as a small tree or large shrub.
Part shade to part sun suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 7 to 9. Site sheltered from cold drying winds. Generally trouble-free in coastal PNW gardens.
For a Pacific Northwest native counterpart in scale and bloom, consider Amelanchier alnifolia (Saskatoon / Western Serviceberry) for white spring flowers and edible blue berries, or Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for show-stopping spring bracts in light shade.
