About This Plant

Azalea Nuccios Mamma Mia is valued for spring flower display, evergreen presence, and refined garden form.

Azaleas are members of Rhododendron prized for their compact form, smaller refined leaves, and brilliant spring (or fall, in Encore series) flower displays. Evergreen azaleas (Kurume, Glenn Dale, Encore) hold leaves year-round; deciduous azaleas (Mollis, Knap Hill, Exbury) drop leaves in fall and often have spectacular fall color.

Part shade to dappled shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, humus-rich, acidic (pH 4.5 to 6.0) soil. Hardy USDA Zone 5 to 9. Plant high in acidic, well-drained soil; mulch lightly with pine fines. Site sheltered from hot afternoon sun. Watch for lacebug damage in too-sunny exposure (a common PNW issue), root weevil notching, and Phytophthora root rot in poorly drained sites.

The Pacific Northwest native azalea is Rhododendron occidentale (Western Azalea) , a fragrant deciduous PNW native of damp woodland edges with spectacular white-and-pink late-spring flowers.
