About This Plant
'Maggie Daley' is a Chinese astilbe that blooms in mid to late summer, which makes it valuable in the perennial garden for extending the season well past the earlier-blooming species. The flower plumes are a distinctive lavender-purple, dense and upright on strong stems above coarsely textured, deep green foliage. At about 2 feet tall, it fits naturally in the middle of a shade border and holds its form through the season without flopping.
Astilbes are shade garden stalwarts that thrive in the dappled light under deciduous trees or in north-facing beds where other flowering perennials struggle. 'Maggie Daley' has the same core requirement as all astilbes: consistently moist soil. These plants do not tolerate drought, and dryness during summer heat will cause the foliage to brown at the edges quickly. Rich, organic soil that retains moisture is ideal. Mulching the base generously helps maintain consistent soil moisture through dry spells.
This is a Proven Winners selection and one of the more reliable late-season astilbes available. Deer and rabbits typically leave astilbes alone.
