About This Plant

Massachusetts Kinnikinnick (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi 'Massachusetts') is the 'Massachusetts' cultivar of native Kinnikinnick (catalog key truncated). 6 to 10 in tall. Zone 2 to 7, full sun, low water, sharp drainage. Evergreen Mediterranean-climate shrub with urn-shaped pink-white late-winter flowers (critical native-bee nectar when little else blooms), smooth mottled cinnamon-red exfoliating bark, and small mealy berries that feed songbirds.

Care Notes

Sharp drainage is essential; manzanita rots in heavy wet clay, especially during cool, wet PNW winters. Plant on a slope or in raised gravel beds with acidic soil. Do not irrigate in summer once established; summer watering is the leading cause of death. Avoid hard pruning into old wood; minimal shaping only after flowering.
