About This Plant

Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone), 'Pacific Madrone' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.

Pacific Madrone , keystone southern Oregon coastal native; sculptural reddish exfoliating bark, glossy evergreen leaves, urn-shaped white spring flowers, and orange-red fall fruit favored by band-tailed pigeons and other birds.

Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in well-drained, lean, slightly acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 7 to 9. WATCHPOINT: notoriously difficult to transplant from larger nursery stock, choose smallest plants and avoid disturbing roots. Avoid summer irrigation once established. Adapted to summer-dry conditions.

This species is native to the Pacific Northwest and contributes ecologically as a wildlife host on the right site.
