Monkey Puzzle Tree , Chilean / Argentine native, prehistoric-looking conifer with stiff sharp scale-like leaves and a sculptural symmetrical form. Long-lived (1,000+ yr).
Full sun suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 7 to 10. Slow-growing. Site with room and away from foot traffic, leaves are sharp. Generally trouble-free in PNW once established.
For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
