About This Plant

Swan Lavender Columbine (Aquilegia 'Swan Lavender') has large lavender-purple spurred flowers on sturdy 24 to 30 inch stems; the Swan series is a modern McKana Giant-type with large flat flowers. 24 to 30 in tall. Zone 3 to 8, part shade, moderate water. Intricate spurred flowers on slender stems above fern-like blue-green foliage. Hummingbirds and long-tongued bumblebees work the nectar-filled spurs. Larval host for Columbine Duskywing butterfly. Will self-seed gently where happy.

Care Notes

Cut spent flower stalks back to basal foliage after blooming to encourage rebloom and manage self-seeding. Allow some seed set if you want the colony to self-renew, as individual plants typically decline after 2-4 years. Trim leaf-miner-damaged foliage to the ground; new clean foliage will emerge. Avoid dividing or transplanting; it resents root disturbance.
