About This Plant

Purple anthuriums are among the more unusual color forms of this popular genus, with deep violet to near-black spathes that make a striking statement in an indoor space. Like all flamingo flowers, the blooms are long-lasting, with each waxy, heart-shaped spathe holding its color for several weeks before giving way to the next. The dark green, glossy foliage provides a handsome backdrop and stays attractive year-round.

Care is the same as for other anthuriums: bright indirect light, warmth, humidity above 50 percent, and a fast-draining potting mix that never stays waterlogged. A bathroom shelf near a window, or a spot a few feet back from a south-facing window, often works well. Feed lightly during the growing season and allow the top inch of potting mix to dry between waterings. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 60 degrees F.

Purple anthuriums are a statement choice for design-conscious indoor spaces. All anthurium species are toxic to pets and people if ingested.
