About This Plant
Alocasia 'Polly' is the compact version of the dramatic African mask plant, reaching about 2 feet tall and wide in a container. Its arrow-shaped leaves are the main attraction: deep, almost iridescent green with bold white veins and wavy, scalloped edges that give each leaf a sculptural, almost architectural quality. If you want a plant that generates conversation, 'Polly' will do it.
Despite its exotic appearance, 'Polly' has fairly straightforward care needs. It wants bright indirect light, warmth, and consistent humidity, ideally 60 percent or higher to mimic its tropical origins. Water when the top inch or two of soil dries out, and avoid letting it sit in soggy conditions. It is sensitive to cold drafts and temperatures below 60 degrees F. Grouping it with other tropical houseplants or setting the pot on a pebble tray with water can help maintain the humidity it needs.
Alocasia 'Polly' is a hybrid developed for the houseplant trade, so it is well-adapted to indoor environments. It goes dormant in low light or cool conditions, which can alarm new owners, but typically rebounds when warmth and light return in spring. All parts of this plant are toxic to pets and people if ingested.
