About This Plant
Aesculus carnea 'Fort McNair' (Red Horsechesnut), 'Fort McNair' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.
Hybrid horse chestnut / buckeye , bold compound leaves, spire-like spring flower panicles in white, pink, or red. Stately specimen for larger spaces.
Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Hardy USDA Zone 5 to 8. Watch for leaf scorch in hot dry summers and Japanese beetle damage. Seeds are toxic if ingested, site away from heavy foot traffic.
For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
