About This Plant
The 'Bolero Bicolor' lipstick plant is a double draw: its trailing stems carry small, creamy white and green variegated leaves that look attractive year-round, and when it flowers, tubular red and orange blooms emerge from dark calyxes in the distinctive shape that gives lipstick plants their name. The bicolor flower display is more striking than solid-color lipstick varieties, and the variegated foliage means this plant earns its place on a shelf even between bloom cycles.
A member of the Gesneriaceae family, 'Bolero Bicolor' is native to tropical Asia and thrives in the warm, humid conditions of a bright indoor space. It prefers bright indirect light, which keeps the variegation crisp and encourages the best flowering. Consistent moisture during active growth and a well-draining mix help it put on a strong show. It appreciates being slightly root-bound, which often triggers blooming.
This is an excellent choice for a hanging basket, a high shelf, or any spot where the trailing stems can show off. It is pet-friendly, which is worth noting in a household with cats or dogs.
