About This Plant
Kiwi Magic is an Actinidia arguta Hardy Kiwi, an East Asian vine bearing smooth-skinned, grape-sized fruit that you eat skin-and-all, sweeter and more delicate than the fuzzy supermarket kiwi. The vines are vigorous, cold-hardy to roughly Zone 4, and beautiful trained over a strong arbor or pergola.
Plant Actinidia arguta in full sun to part shade on rich, well-drained soil with steady summer water. These are large, vigorous vines that demand a serious permanent support, a heavy-duty arbor, T-bar trellis, or pergola. Prune in late winter to control size, and again in summer to keep the canopy manageable and sunlit on the fruiting wood.
Pollination: most Hardy Kiwis are dioecious, meaning male and female flowers are on separate plants. You need one male vine for every six to eight females to set fruit. The cultivar 'Issai' is partially self-fertile and will fruit on its own, but yields improve with a male pollinator nearby. Deer browse young growth heavily, so protect new plantings with cages or fencing until the vines reach the trellis.
If you're considering native fruiting alternatives that support PNW birds and ecology, look at Vaccinium ovatum (Evergreen Huckleberry), Vaccinium parvifolium (Red Huckleberry), Rubus parviflorus (Thimbleberry), Rubus spectabilis (Salmonberry), or Amelanchier alnifolia (Saskatoon). These provide bird food, pollinator support, and Indigenous food heritage in your landscape.
