About This Plant
Acer truncatum x Acer platanoi is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.
Shantung / Purpleblow Maple is a tough small Asian shade tree with glossy palmate leaves and red-purple new growth; selections like 'Pacific Sunset' are widely grown.
Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in adaptable, well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 4 to 8. Generally trouble-free; drought-tolerant once established. Watch for verticillium wilt.
For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
