About This Plant
Acer shirasawanum 'Moonrise' (Japanese Maple), 'Moonrise' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.
Korean / Golden Fullmoon Maple offers chartreuse-gold spring foliage on rounded, deeply lobed leaves; 'Aureum' and 'Autumn Moon' are signature cultivars.
Part shade suits this species. Plant in humus-rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 5 to 7. Slow-growing. Afternoon shade preserves the gold tone. Watch for pseudomonas tip dieback in wet springs.
For a Pacific Northwest native counterpart in scale and bloom, consider Amelanchier alnifolia (Saskatoon / Western Serviceberry) for white spring flowers and edible blue berries, or Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for show-stopping spring bracts in light shade.
