About This Plant
Acer palmatum 'Radiant' (Japanese Maple), 'Radiant' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.
Japanese Maple , refined small ornamental tree with countless cultivars in red, green, gold, variegated, lace-leaf, and weeping forms. Brilliant fall color and exquisite leaf texture.
Part shade to part sun suits this species. Plant in humus-rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 5 to 8. Site sheltered from hot afternoon sun and drying wind in PNW summers. Watch for verticillium wilt and pseudomonas tip dieback in wet springs. Avoid heavy pruning.
For a Pacific Northwest native counterpart in scale and bloom, consider Amelanchier alnifolia (Saskatoon / Western Serviceberry) for white spring flowers and edible blue berries, or Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for show-stopping spring bracts in light shade.
