About This Plant

Abutilon megapoticum (Flowering Maple), 'Flowering Maple', is valued for its garden character and seasonal interest in PNW landscapes.

Flowering Maples (Abutilon) are tropical / subtropical shrubs with maple-shaped leaves and pendulous bell-shaped flowers in red, orange, yellow, or pink. Hummingbird favorites; outstanding container or sheltered-bed shrubs in PNW.

Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Hardy USDA Zone 8 to 11. Marginally hardy in zone 8 PNW; site in warmest exposure or treat as a container plant. Watch for whitefly indoors.

For a Pacific Northwest native shrub of similar character, consider Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon Grape, Oregon state flower), Philadelphus lewisii (Mock Orange), or Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray) , all support native pollinators and birds.
