The good news: organic control is reliable, well-established, and safe for the rest of your garden ecosystem. What Are Cabbage Worms (and What's Eating Your Brassicas)?

Imported Cabbageworm: The Velvet Green Caterpillar
The imported cabbageworm is the larva of Pieris rapae, the cabbage white butterfly. Those small white butterflies with black wingtip spots are the egg-layers. Each female lays pale, bullet-shaped eggs on leaf undersides, and the larvae are velvety, bright green, and nearly invisible against leaf tissue. Cabbage whites overwinter as pupae in the PNW and produce multiple generations from spring through fall.
Cabbage Looper: The One That Arches Its Back
The cabbage looper (Trichoplusia ni) is a moth larva, identifiable by how it moves: it loops its midsection upward as it crawls. Loopers do not overwinter in the northern PNW. They migrate north each summer, with flights beginning mid-July through August, and they also attack lettuce, spinach, and beets in addition to brassicas.
Why Both Species Love Your Kale Patch
Brassicas emit sulfur compounds that attract both species. The mild, maritime climate of coastal Oregon and Washington means PNW gardeners often contend with three or more generations of cabbage whites spread across spring, summer, and fall plantings.
How to Spot Cabbage Worm Damage Before It Gets Serious
Early detection matters. The first sign is ragged, irregular holes in outer leaves, or leaves reduced to just the main veins. A single large looper can consume surprising amounts of leaf tissue in a day.
Look for frass, the small dark pellet-shaped waste caterpillars leave behind, tucked inside forming heads or between broccoli florets. Finding frass inside a head means a caterpillar has already worked its way in. The monitoring threshold drops sharply at the heading stage because contamination is significant even at low populations.
Check leaf undersides at transplant time and during weekly walkthroughs. Imported cabbageworm eggs are pale yellow and bullet-shaped, laid singly. Cabbage looper eggs are tiny and domed. Crush them when you find them.
BT: The Best Organic Tool for Cabbage Worms
If you only add one product to your brassica pest toolkit, make it BT. Look for Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies kurstaki (BTk), sold under brand names like Dipel and Thuricide. It is widely available, inexpensive, certified organic, and extraordinarily targeted in what it affects.
What BT Actually Is
BTk is a naturally occurring soil bacterium that produces crystalline proteins called delta-endotoxins. When formulated as a garden spray, you are applying those proteins onto plant surfaces. It has been in use in organic agriculture for decades and has an extensive safety record.
How BTk Kills Caterpillars and Not Much Else
BTk is an ingestion-only control. A caterpillar must eat treated leaf tissue to be affected. Once ingested, the crystalline proteins activate in the highly alkaline environment of a caterpillar's gut, causing gut paralysis and death within one to three days. Bees, beneficial insects, birds, and mammals lack the alkaline gut chemistry required for activation, so the proteins pass through without effect. This is why BTk is recommended over broad-spectrum options like spinosad, which can affect beneficial insects for five to seven days after application.
How to Apply BT for Maximum Effectiveness
Because BTk works only when eaten, application technique matters. Coat all leaf surfaces where caterpillars feed, especially leaf undersides. Apply in early morning or evening when butterflies are less active. Do not spray directly onto caterpillars. Coat the leaf tissue they will eat next.
When to Reapply: UV and Rain Are Your Enemies
BTk breaks down under ultraviolet light within three to five days in summer sun, and rain washes it off entirely. In a standard PNW coastal summer, reapplication every five to seven days during active butterfly season is the baseline. Reapply after any significant rainfall regardless of where you are in that schedule. On the coast, where fog and rain are regular through fall, build reapplication into your weekly garden routine.
Row Covers: Stop the Butterfly Before She Lays
If BTk is the best reactive control, row covers are the best preventive one. A lightweight floating row cover installed at transplant time physically prevents cabbage white butterflies from laying eggs on your plants. No eggs means no caterpillars.
For spring plantings in coastal Zone 9a, get covers on before cabbage whites become active, often in March or April. Brassicas like kale, cabbage, and broccoli do not require insect pollination, so covers can stay on all season if your setup allows. Secure the edges with soil or garden staples. A single gap at the soil line is enough for a determined egg-layer.
Hand-Picking, Parasitic Wasps, and Other Backup Methods
Row covers and BTk handle the bulk of the pressure. A complete approach also includes physical removal and support for the natural predators working alongside you.
Hand-Picking Eggs and Caterpillars
For small home gardens, hand-picking is highly effective when done consistently. Check plants at least twice a week, focusing on leaf undersides for eggs and newly hatched larvae. Crush eggs when you find them. Drop caterpillars into a bucket of soapy water. Combine this with your BTk schedule and you will intercept a significant portion of each generation early.
Encouraging Parasitic Wasps with Flowering Herbs
Trichogramma wasps parasitize cabbage worm and looper eggs; Cotesia species parasitize the larvae. Both are present in most PNW gardens, and their effectiveness increases when they have access to nearby nectar. Dill, fennel, and cilantro allowed to bolt and flower are ideal. A few flowering herbs near your brassicas are one of the most practical moves for long-term suppression. What About Neem Oil?
Neem works mainly as a feeding deterrent and is slow and inconsistent on caterpillars already inside heads. BTk works faster and is more reliably lethal. Use neem as a supplement, not a primary control.

Spring Flights: Get Row Covers on Early
Cabbage whites emerge with the first consistent warmth, often in March or April on the Oregon and Washington coast. If covers are on at transplant time, you are ahead of the problem. If you missed the window, start BTk immediately and check every plant for eggs.
Summer Peak: Weekly BT Applications
By June and July, cabbage whites may be producing their second or third generation, and loopers begin arriving from the south. Weekly BTk applications are the backbone of your plan for any brassicas not under covers. Pay close attention to forming heads, where the contamination threshold drops sharply and spray coverage inside is harder.
Fall Brassicas: Don't Let Your Guard Down
Cabbage whites stay active until late October or November in mild coastal years. Cover fall transplants at planting time and continue BTk until a hard frost brings butterfly activity to a close.
4 Cabbage Worm Myths That Lead Gardeners Astray
Some common advice leads gardeners to misuse BTk or avoid it unnecessarily. Here are four myths worth clearing up.
Myth: BT kills bees and pollinators. BTk is highly selective for caterpillars. Its proteins activate only in the highly alkaline gut of Lepidoptera larvae. Bees, beneficial insects, birds, and mammals do not have that gut chemistry. This selectivity is the reason BTk is the recommended organic caterpillar control.
Myth: BT works on contact. BTk must be ingested. The caterpillar has to eat treated leaf tissue for the proteins to reach its gut. Spraying caterpillars directly has no effect. Spray the leaves.
