It is native to coastal California north into southwest Oregon (Curry, Josephine, and southern Coos counties), where it grows in mixed evergreen forest, chaparral, and coastal scrub. This is NOT the invasive European Rhamnus cathartica.

From May through July, small star-shaped greenish-cream flowers open over a long season, feeding bumblebees, syrphid flies, and a wide range of native short-tongued bees. The flowers are not showy, but the wildlife payoff that follows is enormous. By late summer the shrub is hung with fleshy berries, green ripening through scarlet to deep blue-black, often with all three colors on the same plant at once.

USFS FEIS calls California Coffeeberry a keystone bird food: band-tailed pigeons feast on the berries, joined by hermit thrush, varied thrush, robin, cedar waxwing, scrub jay, and many others. Black-tailed deer and black bears eat the fruit, and woodrats take the seeds. The shrub is also a documented larval host for mourning cloak, pale swallowtail, and gray hairstreak butterflies. Coastal Indigenous Nations gathered the berries for food and medicinal uses (USFS FEIS Other Uses).

Habit: evergreen multi-stemmed shrub, 5 to 12 feet tall and 5 to 10 feet wide, with leathery oblong leaves and ornamental branching structure. Slow-growing and very long-lived.

Conditions: full sun to part shade, well-drained soil, low water once established. Hardy Zone 7 to 10. Excellent for coastal hedgerows, chaparral-style wildlife gardens, oak-savanna restoration, and large evergreen screens. Honest deer note: Coffeeberry is a STAPLE deer browse, FEIS-documented. Cage young plants in heavy deer-pressure areas; once established it carries enough size to share. Companions: Arctostaphylos densiflora, Ceanothus griseus, Garrya elliptica, Holodiscus discolor, Heteromeles arbutifolia.
